Maybe we\u2019ve even given it ourselves, out of a mix of care and bitter experience.<br \/>\nBut how can you live without expectations? They\u2019re part of what makes us human.<\/p>\n<p>Expectations are tied to hope \u2014 to our longing for connection and safety.<br \/>\nWe expect our loved ones to be there for us, our friends to listen, our partner to understand.<br \/>\nAnd when that doesn\u2019t happen, it hurts.<\/p>\n<p>The problem isn\u2019t that we have expectations.<br \/>\nThe problem begins when we place our emotional weight on them \u2014 when we believe others must be or act a certain way for us to be okay.<\/p>\n<h3>When Expectations Become Traps<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s a difference between having expectations and clinging to them.<br \/>\nWhen we cling, we start projecting onto others our own image of how they should be: more empathetic, more available, more attentive, more consistent.<\/p>\n<p>But people are who they are \u2014 not who we need them to be.<\/p>\n<p>True disappointment comes from the distance between their reality and the movie playing in our minds.<br \/>\nThe more idealized the movie, the harder the fall.<\/p>\n<h3>How to Recognize Unrealistic Expectations<\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes it\u2019s hard to notice when we\u2019ve crossed the line from hoping to demanding.<br \/>\nAsk yourself:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Do you get upset when others don\u2019t react the way they \u201cshould\u201d?<br \/>\nDo you often feel like you \u201cgive more than you receive\u201d?<br \/>\nDo you interpret the absence of a certain gesture as a lack of love?<br \/>\nDo you withdraw when someone doesn\u2019t anticipate your needs?<br \/>\nDo you often think, \u201cIf they really cared about me, they\u2019d do this\u201d?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If some of these sound familiar, it\u2019s not a reason for guilt.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s simply a sign that it might be time to *adjust* your expectations \u2014 not to give them up entirely.<\/p>\n<h3>So How Do You Do That?<\/h3>\n<p>Adjusting your expectations means learning to see the other person\u2019s reality \u2014 not just your own needs.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few simple but essential steps:<\/p>\n<p>1. When you feel hurt, ask yourself: \u201cWhat was I actually expecting?\u201d<br \/>\nMaybe it was just a message, a reaction, a small gesture.<br \/>\nAwareness is the first step toward balance.<\/p>\n<p>2. Check how realistic your expectation really is.<br \/>\nMaybe the person in front of you didn\u2019t even know what you needed.<br \/>\nOr maybe they simply don\u2019t have the emotional capacity to give it right now.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s not about bad intentions \u2014 it\u2019s about human limits.<\/p>\n<p>3. Communicate. Don\u2019t assume.<br \/>\nMany disappointments come from unspoken wishes.<br \/>\nWe don\u2019t say what we need, but we still expect it \u2014 and then get upset when it doesn\u2019t happen.<br \/>\nSpeak gently and directly: \u201cI\u2019d really appreciate it if\u2026\u201d or \u201cIt would mean a lot to me if\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>4. Learn to receive what\u2019s offered \u2014 even if it\u2019s not perfect.<br \/>\nMaybe the support doesn\u2019t come in the form you imagined, but there are small gestures that still show care.<br \/>\nSometimes you just have to notice them \u2014 and accept that love can take different shapes.<\/p>\n<p>5. Focus on yourself \u2014 you can\u2019t control others.<br \/>\nThe more we anchor ourselves in what\u2019s within our power \u2014 our boundaries, our needs, our responses \u2014 the less intense our disappointments become.<\/p>\n<h3>Expectations Can Also Be a Sign of Love<\/h3>\n<p>Having expectations means you care.<br \/>\nIt means you\u2019re engaged, connected, alive.<\/p>\n<p>But real love is about loving the real person \u2014 not your idea of them.<\/p>\n<p>When we see that difference clearly, our relationships become warmer, freer, more authentic.<br \/>\nNot because we gave up expectations, but because we put them in their proper place \u2014 in the realm of humanity, not perfection.<\/p>\n<p>How could we live without expectations?<br \/>\nPerhaps we can\u2019t \u2014 but we can learn not to get lost in them.<\/p>\n<p>When we begin to see people as they truly are \u2014 with their limits, fears, good intentions, and sincere mistakes \u2014 we free both them and ourselves from the pressure of perfection.<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn\u2019t get rid of expectations entirely \u2014 I\u2019d just soften them a little.<br \/>\nSo that, instead of disappointment, something far more valuable can emerge:<br \/>\nan honest, liberating relationship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cDon\u2019t get your expectations up \u2014 you\u2019ll just end up disappointed.\u201d It\u2019s advice we hear often.
